Hormones & Low Libido

Low libido or low sexual desire in women is actually very common. Studies have shown that one third of women experience low libido symptoms at one point in their lives. This number might actually be even higher because studies have also shown that many women are too shy to speak to their doctor.

Symptoms of low libido include having no interest in any type of sexual activity, never or seldom having feelings of sexual thoughts or fantasies, or loss of sexual arousal.

Low libido can be present during puberty as a genetic disorder, develop during menopause as hormones begin to change and testosterone lowers. Low progesterone or an imbalance of estrogen can also cause low sex drive. Low libido can develop overtime becoming a chronic disease caused by a wide array of other factors. Autoimmune diseases have been show to play a role in many women with low libido, along with thyroid conditions, mental illness, chronic fatigue, anxiety, different stages of pregnancy, menopause, infertility, alcohol, drugs, smoking, depression, life stressors including unhealthy relationships, poor body image, or abusive situations, or even certain medications. While all of these factors can play a big role in lowering libido, the common denominator among these factors is too much stress on the body in one way or another.

There are many lifestyle changes that can help improve libido, including minimizing stress, getting plenty of sleep, working on healthy relationships and communication, or reducing drug and alcohol consumption. Taking natural herbs such as Protea Stress Defy or Protea Baseline may also help improve low libido. These supplements contain herbs that help lower the bodies stress response and balance cortisol levels, improve weight management, and help balance hormones naturally.

Low libido can really affect a women’s quality of life and is important for both physical and mental health. To overcome low sex drive it is important to evaluate the root cause and take the appropriate steps to regain a healthy sex drive.
