How Baseline+ May Improve PCOS

Hormone and autoimmune disorders have been on the rise over years, and polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common hormonal endocrine disorders among women of reproductive age. It is estimated that between 5-10% of U.S. women of reproductive and child bearing age have PCOS. With PCOS, hormone imbalance creates problems within the ovaries affecting a woman’s eggs. For a healthy woman, an egg is released during ovulation and is part of a normal healthy menstrual cycle, but with PCOS, the egg may not develop normally or may not be released as it should be with healthy ovulation.

Experts believe that genetics play a role in developing PCOS, but the exact cause is still unknown. However, women with PCOS have higher levels of androgens, also known as testosterone and androstenedione. These androgens are a group of hormones that play a role in male traits and reproductive activity. While these “male trait hormones” are seen in both men and women, men have much higher levels of them than women do. Unless, they have developed PCOS, in which they have a higher level of “free” testosterone.

Because of the higher levels of androgens, women with PCOS can have irregular or absent menstrual periods, infertility, problems with ovulation, excess hair growth, acne, blood sugar disorders like diabetes, weight gain, and difficulty losing weight due to insulin resistance. These high levels of androgens left untreated can cause high blood pressure and high cholesterol which lead to serious health issues like heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States.

In order to reduce the amount of testosterone in the body, women with PCOS can benefit from supplementing with DIM which is included in Protea’s Baseline+. DIM, also known as diindolylmethane, is a natural chemical found in cruciferous vegetables. DIM increases the good estrogen while reducing “bad” estrogen, also known as xenoestrogens.  These xenoestrogens can disrupt our health and are found all over in our environment. They can be found in parabens, plastics, cosmetics, chemicals, fragrances, ect., leading to estrogen dominance and insulin resistance. By supplementing with Protea Baseline+, DIM may help women with PCOS process and eliminate excess estrogen leading to less painful periods, lower body hair, and help regulate their menstrual cycle.
