Adaptogenic herbs; They may increase resistance to stress

Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), also known as tulsi, is a medicinal adaptogenic herb used to help treat various conditions including managing the body’s stress response. Adaptogens are plant materials that may have health benefits due to the way they work to counteract the effects of excess cortisol. 

Stressors can be psychological and/or physical. The numerous demands and quick pace of life are linked to elevated levels of psychological stress. A 2018 study evaluated the  effectiveness of rhodiola rosea supplementation for reaction time and accuracy in psychomotor tests. Twenty-six healthy male students were given 600mg of rhodiola rosea extract compared to a placebo group. Results indicated rhodiola rosea shortened reaction time as well as total response time. Correct responses were also observed in the rhodiola rosea group. (2) Stress Defy included 250mg of rhodiola rosea extract to not only help with the effects of cortisol from stress, but also to assist with focus and improved mental clarity. 

Another ingredient included in Stress Defy to help the body adapt is l-theanine. L-theanine is an amino acid that has beneficial effects on both the mental and physiological signs of stress, such as reducing blood pressure and heart rate. L-theanine has been found to induce a state of calmness and relaxation without the effect of drowsiness. (3) Additionally, l-theanine has the power to alter brain waves in a way that may induce a return to an “alpha” wave pattern. Alpha waves appear when our body and mind are both entirely calm. An increase in serotonin production is also linked to this wave pattern, commonly referred to as wakeful relaxation.
