Ways to Keep Your Thyroid Healthy

The thyroid does a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the body healthy such as maintaining a healthy metabolism, maintaining blood pressure as well as body temperature and heart rate. For anyone who doesn’t have a thyroid condition, it can be easy to forget about this important gland.

Thyroid disease affects approximately 20 million people in the US and about 1 in 8 women (1). The two most common thyroid disorders are hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid).*

Some symptoms of thyroid hormone levels being off include but are not limited too, missed menstrual periods in females, anxiety, hair loss, weight loss or gain, mood swings and temperature sensitivity.

Consulting your doctor is key to determining if you have a thyroid condition and we always recommend consulting one first before starting any new supplements or medications. However, there are some lifestyle changes that can help keep your thyroid on track.*

1. Stick to a diet that is low in processed sugars and processed foods. These can lead to inflammation which can worsen the symptoms of a thyroid condition. It’s best to adhere to a nutritionally dense diet focused around whole foods.*

2. Reduce your stress. High stress is not good for overall health but especially so for those with thyroid conditions. Stress affects the thyroid by influencing how the other hormones balance with it. High stress causes inflammation which can have a very negative impact on those with thyroid conditions. You will want to make sure you aren’t over exercising and you want to address a healthy work life balance to keep stress low. (2) Using the “less is more” approach is best when determining how much to exercise.*

3. Increase movement. Exercising and moving your body can help fight lethargy that can come along with thyroid disorders and can help your body avoid weight gain. Weight lifting can boost lean muscle mass which naturally helps burn more calories.

4. Maintaining a healthy body weight is key. The higher your bodyweight, the more thyroid hormone your body will require. (3)*

Making necessary lifestyle changes such as paying attention to your nutrition, moving more, and lowering stress are key for a healthy, functioning thyroid.
