The importance of electrolyte balance during the summer months

Summertime is approaching and with the warmer climate, dehydration can occur more easily. Signs and symptoms of dehydration can include: fatigue, dizziness, headaches, confusion, and dark-strong urine. You can rehydrate if you have early signs of dehydration by drinking electrolyte-rich fluids.

Electrolytes are particles that carry a positive or negative electric charge and help conduct neural impulses, contract muscles, maintain hydration, and control the pH levels in your body. Electrolytes help maintain fluid balance through osmosis. Excess heat, vomiting, and diarrhea are common causes of electrolyte imbalances. It’s always best you stay ahead of dehydration by keeping up on electrolytes and replenish immediately after they are lost.

Sports drinks are popular for hydration, however, it can be difficult to find an electrolyte drink free of excess sugar which can actually increase dehydration. Food dyes are another obstacle when looking for a healthy option for electrolytes. Three dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6) that are often used in sports drinks have been discovered to contain benzidine and other carcinogens.(2) Manufacturers use food dye to make their product more visually appealing with it being a less expensive alternative to using natural coloring.

Vegan Amino+ is a great option for avoiding dehydration. Sweetened with stevia and monk fruit, Vegan Amino+ avoids packing empty calories and still tastes great. Flavor options include Peach tea and Elderberry. Fruit and vegetable juice powder provide color therefore no synthetic dyes are necessary. *

Electrolyte blend includes:

Sodium

Our body depends on sodium for proper fluid balance. Sodium is mostly lost through sweat and urine and is important to replenish as it aids in the absorption of nutrients. The body also uses sodium to control blood pressure and blood volume.

Potassium

The activation of nerve impulses throughout your neurological system depends on potassium. The heartbeat, reflexes, muscular contractions, and many other bodily functions are all controlled by nerve impulses.

Magnesium

According to some research, around three-fourths of Americans do not consume the necessary daily intake of magnesium. (1) Maintaining adequate magnesium levels is crucial for muscle contraction. It also helps relax muscle tissue to avoid cramping. *

In addition to electrolytes, amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine (BCAAs) can help the body recover from exercise. Several studies have found BCAAs to reduce delayed on-set muscle soreness after 24-72hrs. (3) *

You can consume Vegan Amino+ anytime around workouts, hiking, sporting events, or just as a refreshing daily drink. *
