The importance of selenium for a healthy thyroid

An essential micronutrient required for the maintenance of several cellular processes is selenium. Selenium is a trace mineral needed in small amounts with the thyroid gland having the highest concentration of selenium of any tissue. It also plays a role in immune health and acts as an antioxidant.

Selenium levels have a significant influence on proper thyroid development and function. Research has found that supplementation may be an option to enhance clinical indicators and quality of life in some individuals with autoimmune thyroid disorders. (1)

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition that develops when the thyroid gland is attacked by the immune system, causing it to overproduce thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism). Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI), which has comparable effects to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), is produced in Graves disease, and this leads to an excess of TH. Individuals diagnosed with Grave’s disease have displayed decreased selenium levels. Selenium supplementation may have positive benefits on thyroid autoimmune disorders, according to some research. (1)

Clinical studies have demonstrated that a deficiency in selenium can increase the occurrence of several thyroid disorders. It has been demonstrated that selenium therapy may slow the evolution of the condition and enhance quality of life in those with Graves’ orbitopathy.

An autoimmune illness known as Hashimoto’s disease can result in an underactive thyroid known as hypothyroidism. Other names for Hashimoto’s disease include chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis and chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Selenium treatment in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis has been linked to lower anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody concentrations and improved thyroid ultrasonography structure. (2)

In fact, it was discovered that a selenium deficit reduces the production of thyroid hormones by impairing the activity of selenoproteins, particularly the iodothyronine deiodinases (DIOs) that convert T4 to T3. (3)

Low selenium levels have also been associated with depressed mood, anxiety, and confusion. (4) To improve selenium levels, it’s important to consume foods that have a high concentration such as brazil nuts, shellfish, and organ meats. Sometimes our diet can fall short in providing the nutrients our body needs. In this case, supplementation may be helpful. We created Opti-Thyroid+ to aid the body in healthy thyroid function.*

Among selenium, Opti-Thyroid+ includes several other natural ingredients to help manage the health of the thyroid. Choosing a natural alternative to synthetic medication can spare a list of side effects commonly onset by various thyroid medications.*

Synthetic thyroid medication may cause one or more of the following side-effects:

weight loss or gain

headache

changes in appetite

diarrhea

vomiting

chances in menstrual cycle

sensitivity to heat

hair loss

joint pain

leg cramps

fever

While taking synthetic medications it may be difficult to distinguish between on-going thyroid symptoms and/or negative side effects from the medication taken to correct the thyroid.

Those who suffer with thyroid imbalances may have more energy and a reduction in unpleasant symptoms when choosing a natural remedy like Opti-Thyroid+. Additional ingredients such as L-Tyrosine, Ashwagandha, Guggul extract, and L-glycine are included to support the health and function of the thyroid.*
